Lorraine was born on March 21, 1927 in Buckman, Minnesota to Edward and Magdalena (Brausen) Vogtlin. Her childhood was spent on the family farm and attending school in Hillman, MN. As a young women Lorraine moved to the metro area where she worked at Sears & Roebuck. Lorraine was united in marriage to Charles Balder in April of 1946. Never one to be far from her roots, the couple eventually settled in the Onamia area to raise their family. Over the years Lorraine worked as a supervisor at Fingerhut in St Cloud and the Garment Factory in Onamia , operated the Twin Pines Tavern south of Onamia, and managed Grannys Kitchen at Fort Mille Lacs Village for over 15 years. She made many friends and treated everyone as family. She was an excellent cook and baker, known for her turkey dinners and sour cream raisin pie. Lorraine also enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles, crocheting, and tending to her flower garden. In 2007 Lorraine moved to the Milaca Elim home where she earned the nickname "Roxy" for her quick wit and fiery personality. She enjoyed keeping the kitchen staff on their toes and regularly worked in their onsite store. Visiting with her grandchildren, family, staff and residents of the Elim Home was how she liked to spend her time.
