Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM Saturday, March 6, 2010, at St. James Catholic Church in Randall, MN. Burial will be at St. James Parish Cemetery in Randall, MN. Friends may call from 4 to 8 PM Friday, March 5 at Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN, and from 9:30 to 10:30 AM Saturday at the Church. Parish prayers will be held on Friday at 7 P.M. and a Christian Mothers Rosary will be prayed at 6 P.M. at the Funeral Home. Donald was born on August 28, 1924, in Cushing, MN to the late William C. & Albina (Schmidt) Newman. He grew up in the Cushing area and attended high school in Little Falls graduating in 1942. Don then went on to attend the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN. He was united in marriage to Doreen Block on November 28, 1946, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Buckman, MN. Don worked in road construction, farming, and owned and operated the Lazy Pines Resort on Green Prairie Fish Lake with his wife Doreen for many years. Don was also maintenance foreman for the Morrison County Highway Department for 13 years which he retired from. After selling the resort Don & wife Doreen moved to Randall, MN and later moved to Little Falls in 2003. Don enjoyed hunting, fishing, making wood crafts, playing guitar, and singing songs. Don had an amazing ability to remember and recite songs and old poems. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. Don is survived by wife of 63 years, Doreen Newman of Little Falls, MN; sons, Robert (Judy) Newman of Little Falls, MN and Dennis (Chris) Newman of Randall, MN; daughters, Yvonne (Joe) Mariotti of Fergus Falls, MN and Judine (Gary) Groskreutz of Little Falls, MN; 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; and special dog, Maggie. Don is preceded in death by parents, William C. & Albina Newman; 2 brothers and 4 sisters.
