LaVerne was born on September 10, 1924, in Long Lake Township to the late Howard and Julia Hanson. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on June 13, 1944. LaVerne was united in marriage to Delores Larson on September 26, 1944, in Oceanside, CA. He served during World War II in Okinawa, Japan as a Scout Sniper. LaVerne was a recipient of the Purple Heart medal and was honorably discharged on May 9, 1946. After LaVerne’s honorable discharge he attended agriculture vocational school. LaVerne worked as a farmer for many years while he and his wife Delores raised their six children. He retired from farming in 1986 and became very involved in public service. LaVerne was very active on the Onamia School Board, the national & state Cattleman’s Association, & was a driving force along with many other veterans with getting the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery started. He enjoyed golfing and playing cards especially cribbage.
LaVerne was greatly loved and will be dearly missed.
LaVerne is survived by sons, Stephan (Dawn) Hanson of Eagan, MN, Scott (Terry) Hanson of Hillman, MN, and Craig Hanson of Pierz, MN; daughters, Kathy (Dave) Guse of Becker, MN and Lorna Pesheck of Brainerd, MN; 11 grandchildren & 16 great-grandchildren.
LaVerne is preceded in death by wife, Delores; son, Tim Hanson; grand-daughters, Terri, Shana, & Michelle.
Casketbearers will be Shawn Guse, Monte Hanson, Evan Phillips, Adam Hanson, Aric Hanson, Don Mittlestadt.
