Funeral Service for Elmer Monson will be at 11 AM, Monday, June 7, 2010 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hillman, MN, with Rev. Kris Johnson officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Hillman. Friends may call from 4 to 8 PM Sunday at the Shelley-Virnig Funeral Chapel in Pierz, MN, and from 10 to 11 AM, Monday at the church. Military rites provided by Hillman American Legion Post # 602. Elmer Monson was born on March 14, 1921 in South Haven, MN, to the late Frank and Jesse (Hart) Monson. The family moved to the Hillman area in 1928. Elmer joined the U.S. Navy in 1943, serving in the South Pacific onboard the USS Essex during WWII. Elmer was united in marriage to Clarice C. Probasco on September 30, 1946 in Little Falls, MN. They lived for a time in Braham, MN, and Onamia, MN, before eventually settling down back in Hillman. Elmer worked as a welder at Transformer Company in St. Cloud, MN. He then worked as a mechanic at numerous companies, including Floric’s Garage in Hillman, Seelen Implement, Hanson Implement, Bostrum’s Garage, and Northstar Well Drilling Company, from which he retired in 1994. During this time, Elmer also drove a school bus for the Onamia School District. Elmer enjoyed working on his “Hobby Farm” and deer hunting. He was a longtime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Hillman American Legion. Elmer is survived by his sons, Elmer G. (Pat) Monson of St. Cloud, MN, and Daniel K. (Sandra) Monson of Onamia, MN; daughters, Beverly (Arlan) Gehring of Hutchinson, MN, Barbara (Richard) Wruck of Mapleton, MN, Deborah Wohlers of Albertville, MN, and Lesa Gottwalt of Cold Spring, MN; brother, Walter Monson of Little Falls; 23 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and his dog Buffy. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Clarice Monson; brothers, Harold, Ernest, Nels, Robert, Edwin, and Orville Monson; sisters, Hazel Schlegel, Marie Carlson, Violet Olson, Amelia Crotty, Irene and Evelyn Monson. Elmer’s casketbearers will be Michelle Monson, Isaiah Reisdorf, Rachel Reisdorf, Carl Monson, Peter Monson, and Daniel Monson.
